Change is constant and so does every cultures and traditions.Being non-independent entities, society creates them. The people of each and every country contribute towards cultures in their own way. If we open the historical records we see the passion and reason behind such transitional events, which people mostly forgot in the ravages of time and in due course lost. Can a mother forgot her son’s name? As impossible it sounds, the land of Madurai, similarly cannot forgot her son R. krishna Rao.

Early Days

He did his schooling from Sethupathi High School, Madurai and came to Chennai (earlier known as Madras) in the year 1938 and joined the office of M/s. Chitale & Sons as an assistant. He had high regards towards Mr. Chitale and his family members. He used to reminisce and share some interesting incidents that happened in M/s. Chitale office with his family members for a long time.

Second world war

In the year 1942, during the period of World War II a person were shifted from city to other places for safety reasons, but Krishna Rao prefered to stay in the city and was working as part time employee with a half-a-day salary. During this time, he joined School of Arts and crafts for a five year Diploma course in Fine Arts and he was outstanding in learning art from his master and secured first class, due to this outstanding talent in art, he was given 2 years exemption and finished the course in 3 years in flying colors. Most of his paintings had themes related to landscapes, cattle, temples in and around Madurai in the style of Impressionism and post- Impressionism.

Career

In 1945, two years before India got independence; he joined the war publicity department and created many wonderful posters. Later, in 1948 he joined as a faculty in the School of the Arts and Crafts and got appointed as the Head of the Department of commercial art. He also worked as a textile designer in a firm in Tondiarpet, in Chennai, from 1946 – 1948.

Family

In 1947 the couple had their first baby girl and named her Kamala, meaning lotus in Sanskrit. In 1949, the couple had their first son and named him Jayachandar, who is currently a contemporary artist in Chennai. There is a small anecdote behind the naming of their second son as Srichandar. When the artist was in Benaras (also known as Kasi or Varanasi) and enjoying a boat ride on the river Ganga, he lost his balance and fell into the flowing water. A person by name Sri Chand rescued him and thus saved his life. As a thanksgiving gesture the artist promised that he will name the next child, if it was a boy, as Sri Chander and thanked him. And in 1952, when the couple had their third son he remembered his promise and named the child Sri Chander. They had their youngest son Balachander in the year 1954

Reaching the peaks

The year 1949 was considered by him as one of his milestones, when he designed the monogram for Tamil Nadu state replacing the colonial symbol used even after India’s Independence. In 1965, he was promoted as vice-principal and transferred to Government School of Art and Crafts, Kumbakonam, in Tamil Nadu. In 1968, he became the Principal of College of Arts and Crafts and had retired in 1971. Few years from retirement, in 1974, he became the Director of the Art Department at Kalakshetra, founded by Padma Bhushan Rukmini Devi Arundale. The artist reached the heavenly abode on 31st July 2006.

Awards

The artist was awarded a fellowship by Tamil Nadu Ovia Nunkalai Kuzhu in 1980. And in 1985 he was awarded the title of Veteran Artist by All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS), New Delhi. In 1991, he was honored with the most prestigious award Kala Vibhusan by the then Prime Minister of India Shri. Chandra Shekhar Singh. The world famous philosophical center of Kanchi Kamakshi peetham, Kanchipuram awarded the artist the title of Chitra Kala Sagar on 1st January 1995.

Commissions Works

Conceived and designed the temple gopuram emblem of the Government of Tamil Nadu (1948).

Designed the Government of Tamil Nadu raffle ticket with the motif of a boy raising his right hand (1971).

Organised and worked, in an honorary capacity, for many district level art organisations (Padappai, Chennai, Vellore, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Kalakuruchi).

Exhibitions

Participiated in many group shows and one man shows. They were the first to experiment on temple architecture and build 4 kinds of temples forms. All the experiments are found in mahabalipuram near Chennai. During this period Mahendravarman I constructed many cave temples. Mr. Ragothaman wrote an excellent travelogue regarding these cave temples. Many people know about color wheel, the primary, secondary and the tertiary colours. The real fun in understanding colors is by experimenting with colors or rather playing with colours. The more you study about it you learn more. Each colour has an unique character, a special place in the artist palette and a wonderful history. Not only this, it is also fascinating to understand the colour name and its meaning. For example., French ultra Marine is a cool blue colour. The name is because to get the raw material for this color, people used to cross the sea. Marine means sea and ultra means beyond. So the name French ultra Marine.

Similarly, Persian blue (one of my favorite) was discovered in the lab, but the intention was to get a kind of red and during the process Persian blue was discovered. This is the fun part in learning colour history.
The next interesting area is colour theory and colour mixing. 100% of students like to learn more of colour mixing by doing it. They feel like a game and if they come with the right colour after mixing, they are more than delighted.
Try giving a search on the word "Color" and you will see many websites, books, blog on the topic. One of the interesting experience i had during a research about colour is that my thirst to know more about colours and to experiment never ends. This text about colours may end in a few more lines but not the experiments i did with colour. I have found out many interesting facts and i am planning to use it for humanity.

Do write your experiences with colors. Let the world know your interesting experiences.
Bye

How to become an artist? part 2

Hi,
Many of my students ask me how be a good artist? Well, their is no straight answer to this question. We have to analysis this question with reference to the great artists of the past. Think of a great artist and try to remember any of his/her best painting. First you will try to see the painting and appreciate the beauty of the painting , now stop looking at the painting instead study the painting. Study how the artist has applied the colours, how he /she has composed the picture and how he/she is able bring life into the painting.

At the same time practice painting. A painting a day or a sketch a day.

bye

What are the secrets of a great artists?

Hi,
I think this is one of the most important and common question asked by an art student or art lover during his journey in a museum or in an art class or in any situations. Either way, this is a very important question. To be very frank with you their is no direct answer for this question. We need to analysis a few issues to understand the situation and then come to a conclusion. One of the key reason i think is the teacher from whom you learn. Because he is the one whom we believe and follow. He should be a person who has understood art to the core. He should not be a person who reads art books and discuss with the students, instead he should involve the students in art studies and into various art forms, not only from his country but international artists and art. The next key thing is the interest level in the student to learn art. Interest in art is an abstract term it has to be specific in terms of medium, technique and other issues. All these issues can be learnt and mastered. The third is how to do it , OK now we have understood the theory of art and also seen a demo from the art teacher. But still some thing is missing.....'

"I try to do like my art teacher but i am not able to achieve the quality what my art teacher get in his/her paintings or drawings.... what is missing in my painting...???"
such are the question which pop up in an art students mind. This is quite natural and i always welcome it.

Now back to our analysis " what are the secrets of great artists? "The Secret is "Aesthetics"
The word aesthetics means how we perceive art in terms of beauty. This is too abstract from a birds point of view, we need to study aesthetics and then analysis all the great artists painting from this new angle, then you will find the secret. Their may be many books on this subject, but when you study it by yourself you will see that the painting will talk to you using their unique language namely lines, shapes, compositions, colours, balance and many more...

You need to do it to experience it. What a new feeling you will get???
One of the most important issue is that all great masters paintings has attracted viewers and their are many websites about these great artists, the issue is that of "life in the painting" . All these great paintings has life and this is what important. The character talk to the other character, the colours enhances the dialogue and the lines, shapes and compositions work together like a music getting synchronization with melody, harmony and rhythm.

If you have any experiences about aesthetics or about a great art by a great artists , do comment it.

Thanks

bye

New Web Site Launched

Dear Friends,

I am happy to announce that i have launched a new web site called
http://www.mallikaistudio.com
Mallikai studio is my own music producing company started on 19th January 2002.

Currently, a new music album work is going on... Well, Golden ratio is the 1.6180339887. it is also called the phi. This is not a small number or don't think that it is irrelevant. This magic number is distributed a lover the universe. You can see the distribution of phi in nature, paintings, music, dance in human and animal anatomy etc.,

It is been scattered all around us. But the magic is that we don't realise it that we are inside and outside a golden ratio. If you study any good portrait you will see that golden ratio is implemented. All art student should learn about golden ratio and how it is implemented in nature. nature is the best art teacher. Once you have learnt it try to implement it in your art work and see the difference. All you paintings will have mature look and feel.

bye

Freedom for art

Hi,

I am blogging after a long time... I was wondering how many people in art world today are able to create the magic of great masters Thur a new medium digital art. Let it be any medium, art is changing and should change. Change is very important and it is an on - going process. If their was no change then how could their be new inventions and discoveries. New artist need freedom to create something new and freedom comes when you have a peace of mind. Artists cannot work in a tense environment and they need lots of space to think and improvise their thoughts.
In my view the best place or an environment would be a farm house away from the city's busy business. Being with nature is a something a nice feeling to have. It gives you lots of new idea and hope. Sometimes new idea for old problems can be found in such places...

Such remote places has an another advantages... you can study the local people and their customes, culture andf their lifestyle..

Even these can give you good ideas for your paintings...

Post your comments on freedom for art...
Happy painting...

pata paintings

Hi,

During my visit to dehi, i was able to attent an art exhibition of pata paintings. Many learn painting or music or any art for that matter. But do you know that all these are very much related to "The Chakra".

Chakra means wheel in Sanskrit. There are 8 important chakra and all these are related to a special energy.

Muladhara

Swadhisthana

Manipura

Anahata

Vishuddha

Ajna

Bindu

Sahasrara

Each chakra has a special meaning and its unique color. It also has a musical note attached to it. All these are very subtle but once you understand its power and it will do wounder. You will be elevated to higher levels. This is followed in Hinduism and Buddhism. This is beyond religion. As you try to develop the knowledge of these chakra's you will be fascinated towards it. It is very difficult to write all the knowledge I knew about this fantastic concept. They draw in walls, in the ground, but they do it without fear. Always allow the child to draw whatever he/she feels. The parents should help them in their pursuit of art. Buy a set of colour box, a good sketch pad, a few pencils. The child will fell happy and will be encouraged to draw. Never tell him/her that your drawing is bad. This will affect the child's interest. And by doing so you may be stopping his/her creativity. If the child has not drawn well tell the child to do it in a better way. The most important vitamin the child needs is encouragement.

Enroll him/her in an art school in your neighbourhood. Buy some good art books for children and present it to them. They will start to draw and learn. The art teacher will find out the child's needs and his/her potential. Take him to a nearby art gallery and teach him about art and its value. Do spend some time with them in looking at their art and appreciate it.

These are very important. Allow him/her to participate in all art competitions, even if they don't get any prize. Let them do art for the fun and thrill. One day your son/daughter will come as a good artist.

Happy drawing...

How to become an artist

Hi,

This is one of the most important topic that comes from any art student. Many think to be an artist need some special qualities. But the reality is different from fiction. Art is an universal language and it can understood by all, from the early man to the present computer savvy modern man. Their are a few requirements to become an artist. This is different from "how to become a great artist". I will talk about that later. But first how to become an artist.

You need to have the following basic requirement's:

Lots and lots of interest in art,

Don't take art lightly be serious,

Learn all that is available about art and its related areas,

Study how to compose a painting, light and color, perspective, human anatomy, still life, landscape, flowers, animals etc.,

Practice a lot,

Study paintings of not only great artist but also fellow artists,

Go to the local art gallery and have a chat with the curator,

Study art works from museums,

Learn about the artists life and his/her inspiration towards their art,

Learn from books, websites and blogs ( like this ... lol),

You may not like still life or landscape paintings but it is necessary to learn. Because the learning helps you to understand you need better and it will help in achieving the painting you want to create. The techniques will be useful to create the kind of painting you cant you create.

Select the medium you like the following are the common medium:

Water Color,

Oil,

Acrylics,

Pastels,

Pencils,

Charcoal,

Digital ( The New member in the list )

But how to select the medium, to find this --- try all, you will like one and you may not like the other. Once your inner self tells you that is the medium i like, then that is your medium.

Once you have selected you medium, select a good book or a good art institute in your local neighbourhood. Enroll their and from their you journey begins into the fantastic world of art.

Understand what your art instructor says and analyse it. Discuss it with your friends and log in to art communities on the Internet and share your thoughts. This will give you more ideas and exposure. Study art from all angles and the most important don't be afraid to experiment. Who knows an experiment you do may turn into a masterpiece.

Do post your experiences in your art school or in your art carrier here, I will be happy to know.

Happy Painting...

Why Is Art History Important

Hi,

One of the most important subjects in art is art history. Many students take it very lightly. They feel that art history is not that important, while learning how to paint is. Actually, both are important. Their is a reason for this. If you see the human evolution, we see the progress made by the early man to the present. The advantage is that we not only learn but also try to solve the problem( The missing link).

Similarly when you learn art history we have many advantages:

We learn about the great artist,

Their techniques,

The method they adopted to preserve art items,

Their culture,

Their tradition,

When you learn these you will get impressed by their artistic talent and you can even try one or two of the great artists paintings.

Their are many books and web site which talk about art and its development. But their is a few books and web site which talk about women artists, art from small countries. Most of them talk about the western art. Western art has influenced many young artists (including me). But their are excellent paintings, sculptures from the east.

An art student should keep his mind open to learn more about art from different countries.

Partial list of best art history web sites...

http://witcombe.sbc.edu/ARTHLinks.html

www.metmuseum.org/toah/splash.htm

http://arthistory.about.com/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_history

http://www.arthistory.cc/

http://www.huntfor.com/arthistory/

Enjoy....

Hinduism and Art

Hi,

While a student studies art history he/she studies Asian art under which they will study Indian art. Most of the old Indian art are not found in canvas but in temples. In all temples you will see the artistic creative talent of the artist. Most of the subjects are from Hinduism and from the scared text. Like "The Ramayana, The Mahabaratha, The Upanishads, or from The Puranam". From these mythological stories the artist used to take some of the important scenes and depict in sculpture. For example, if the temple is for Lord Siva, then the sculptures will depict important scene from the shiv puranam. Thus the devotee will learn about the important miracles of Lord Shiva.

But their are many symbolic sculpture which are personification of yoga, the soul, the kundalini yoga or about the 12 chakra. They will be easy to decrypt but a learnt scholar with a keen eye can find the meanings and can also explain them.

Each and every pillar are decorated. The involvement of those artist is clearly seen in these pillars. The next time you visit a Hindu temple do spend some time in studying the sculptures and try to understand their inner meanings.

The photo to right is from belur, karnataka, India. Here the Goddesses of wealth "Lakshmi" is seen sitting on the lap of the preserver of this world "Lord Vishnu". Click the image and see the decoration given to both the deities. See the pillars on either side. Similarly in each temple you will find many interesting facts. Some temples are very old, in India we have temples that are more than 1000 years old.

The more you understand the more you will enjoy them.
The same is true to any art.

The temple architecture of south Indian and north Indian are different. This is because of many reasons. Different raw materials available in different region of India. Different period in which the temples were build. Some are architecturally excellent and we have lots of lessons to learn.

In most of the sculpture you will see that the deities are in some dance form and in a particular dance movement.

This is a subject which is so vast like our art history. I wanted to give you an introduction to this subject.

Happy Exploration...

How to maintain your brush

Hi,

This may look a simple topic but, if you are serious about art then you should take good care of the art materials. When a art student goes to a art shop to purchase colours, brushes, canvas etc., he/she is highly motivated and sometimes purchases the wrong items. What I mean by wrong items is that if you purchases too much of linseed oil than required then you are wasting money.

Items to purchase:

A good quality colour box with a minimum 12 colours. Go for artist colours.

An excellent notebook for sketches, see to that the papers are having good textures.

A good set of brushes, preferably 1,3,5,7,9,11.

If your medium is oil then 1/2 a litre of linseed oil.

1/2 a litre of turpentine for cleaning the brushes.

The most important canvases, you have various sizes available in the market select 2 to 3.

The above listed items are available in any art shop. But the most important things that are not available in any art shops are:

Patience

A good art teacher who loves his students are teaches art without any bias.

A lot of interest and hard work.

Once you have completed a section or the whole painting, wash your brushes.

Things to remember:

Do not damage the bristle.

Do not put too much pressure on the bristle.

Clean the bristle with a cotton cloth, the pigment will go. Then use water in the case of watercolour / acrylics, or turpentine in the case of oil medium. This will remove the pigment that are in between the bristle and you can use it again.

Let the brush be left to dry ( point to remember the bristle should point towards the celling.) Many make this common mistake. They keep the bristle pointing towards the floor and once it is dry the bristle turn towards a side. ( Please don't do this).

Select the brush you need and then apply colour. Don't apply and wait for a situation to use it.

Don't throw a old brush it can be used for giving textures or for some special effects.

These are the important things to remember, the more you take care of your art materials the more they will be of use.

Ragamalika Paintings

Hi,

I am back with my new post. This time i want to share with you an old traditional painting in India. "The Ragamalika Painting or Ragamala Paintings". The term ragamalika/ragamala painting comes from the Sanskrit's language

Raga - equivalent of a scale in the western music.

Malika/mala - means a garland.

So, Raga Malika means a garland of musical scale. The term ragamalika has two different meaning in Indian art and in Indian music. According to Indian art it means a painting which has been composed based on a poem.

In the case of Indian music it is a composition which involves more than one scale in the song, ie., the first passage will be in a scale and the next in another scale.

So a garland is created with different scales. If you carefully study the ragamalika paintings and its history you will find that these were done during the mughal period and most of these paintings were done by Muslims. Where as the concept were pure Hindu oriented. This is the greatness of India. Our Secularism. Each of these painting explains the poets beauty, and the artist tries to express in paintings. The male ragas are called ragaas and the female raage are called ragini. This is a painting of a "ragini Bhairavi" Here the artist has depicted the end of a concert pictorially which is sung at the end of a concert. The primary subject is seen worshiping the Lord Shiva. This raag is found in both carnatic and Hindustani music. Similarly for each of the important raag their are paintings. These paintings were done in Deccan, Hyderabad c. 1700-1725 A.D.

There are six principal raag - Bhairava, Dipika, Sri, Malkaunsa, Megha and Hindola and these are meant to be sung during the six seasons of the year; summer, monsoon, autumn, early winter, winter and spring. There are also many raag which are meant to be sung during morning, afternoon, evening, night and mid-night. This is followed in both Hindustani and in carnatic music. The reason for such timing is that all ragas are scared. And when you sing a raga as per the norms you get a particular effect. For, example, the raga Sri Rangani is a sad raga. If you sing it properly you will feel depressed. Once I did a raga alapa for about an hour in sri ranjani raga. Suddenly I started to weep.

There are ragas which can bring surprising effects like rain, sleep etc., This is the power of Indian music if followed and performed correctly.

Similarity between painting and web design

HI,

Design is an integral part of any art, let that be painting, dance, web design, digital art etc., Being a web designer i try to create each page like a piece of art, which is what every web designer is doing or trying to achieve. In the case of web design we can have either a vertical or a horizontal layout and most of the inner layer are rectangle. This trend is changing we see more pure css layout where we can have a running design from bottom left side to the top right hand side of the monitor.

In the case of a painting, design is also important. The representation of a tree by itself a design. A proper designed painting is a delight to our eyes. The same is true in the case of web design. We always try to visit a site that has more content, but at the same time a web site with good design also attracts our interest.

Arist R.Krishna Rao

Hi,

I am very proud to blog today, since I am going to post about my grandfather, Prof. R.Krishna Rao. Who was a great artist in India. He was a genius in watercolor paintings. In most of his paintings you can see village landscapes. He was also recognised for his south Indian temple paintings. He created the Tamil Nadu official emblem. His inspiration for this emblem was the great Madurai Meenakshi Temple. Being born and brought up in madurai, and his residence was very close to Madurai Meenakshi Temple. This influenced him a lot, and in most of his paintings you can see this influence. In his lifetime he has been to many places and composed many sketches and paintings. He has been awarded the following titles

Kala Vhibushan

Chitra Kala Sagar

His painting titled "The Street Scene" is on display at the chennai government museum under modern painting. Most people recognize him with his hat and the traditional Indian dress the "Gibba"...

I remember my childhood day, when I and my brothers used to have lots of fun. He introduced to me many critical issues regarding art. In his training I have learned many aspect of art and techniques in painting. He valuable lessons are my real assets. In each and every painting you will see the beauty of his composition and his aesthetic look towards nature...

He left us on July 27th 2006. We all miss him. It is also been implemented and used in art as a tool for development. With the development of new software's and breath-taking hardware technologies., many digital artist have created stunning pictures. With the advancement of 3D modelling, digital art has taken a new perspective. Today with software like Painter, Photoshop,Gimp,3D Max, Vues,Bryce, Maya, After effects the list is endless, many artist has the capacity to come with innovative concepts and the usage is unlimited. But traditional painting has its own charm. It will be unfair to compare traditional art with digital art. Even in many places digital art is not accepted. It will take time for the art community to accept it as a new medium. First their was water color then came oil as a new medium. How many people shifted to oil? A few, but when they learnt the advantages in oil they experimented and adopted it. Similarly, digital art will be accepted by one and all. What is more important is the open mind in art. Art is pure and should be pure from politics and other issues of politics.

Many people are interested to learn digital art. It is a good wave in art movement. What I have seen is that they learn all the required software's and all the techniques needed. But if they also learn the traditional art form it will help them in creating the best art work. If you study some of the best digital art you will be able to feel the emotion in the subject..

To get success in any art form these things are important...

Practice, practice, practice and practice

Constant learning

Studying the art market

Evolution of art.

Thanks...

How to improve this blog

Hi,

I started this blog just 5 days back and i am very happy to see the progress. Many readers will be intrested to know....

Thanks...

Evolution in art

Hi,

In many art galleries we see many paintings of various artists. Some paintings are very excellent while other don't catch our attention. Their are many reasons to this. Some are physiological, personal bias etc., But the most important issue is composition. How an artists attracts the visitor. Their are many compositional rules to be followed while you create a painting. Most of these rules are very easy to learn and to follow. Practise makes you perfect.

But many a times I have seen that not all paintings have to follow the rules of composition. If by breaking a rule, you are able to compose a better picture or able to get an excellent composition then you are having the freedom to do so. What is more important is the final effect a painting is able to give to its visitor.

A art student should learn all the rules of composition. But their is one more subject where he/she has to concentrate "Art History". One of the excellent subject to study. The advantage is you will be able to learn the techniques of great artist around the world.

If you have seen the cave paintings, they depict a new story, new point of view. Those artists were more expert in painting animals compared to humans. But still it is a great achievement.

Now mankind has evolved and he is able to draw the subtle details in a painting. From the great master and from our art teachers we have learned how to calculate the human body proportion and also learnt the art of giving natural skin colours. Let the medium be oil or water or acrylics or digital, art is still the same. The art of evolution and its history should be given to all art lovers. In many art institutions they also teach art history which gives the student a wider perspective.

Thanks

Monalisa

Hi,
It will be rare if a person says that he/she has never seen the great "Monalisa" painting. Many art critic, artists and in many magazine people write their views about monalisa. Let the view be either positive or negative, what is more important from an artists point of view is the beauty of the painting. Its aesthetic feel leonardo da vinci is able to give. Recently in the TV, I saw a team of scientists has successfully uncovered a strange fact. The voice of monalisa.

But their are many paintings which is equal at par to Monalisa which needs to get the spotlight. Many women artist should come forward to our art world and explore the beauty and bliss.

Great artist like William Bouguereu have done excellent paintings which are so beautiful. Every art student has something to learn from his paintings. You don't need an art teacher to understand the beauty of his paintings. Just look at them "They will teach you". The subject will talk to you. You will be invited into the painting, feel the happiness and enjoy the painting.

Happy Painting...

bye

Beautiful Art Quotations

Hi,

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite quote
"If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all." by Michelangelo Buonarroti

How beautifully the artist is expressing his thoughts about his hard work.

Welome to the world of paintings

Hello painting lovers,

Painting is always fascinating medium to us.
